swimming in the sea

First summery weekend of the year by my reckoning. We went to the beach and had a picnic and Lucy frollicked in the sea. Much rollerskating too - Lucy is pretty good at that now - photos to follow at some stage.

Eddie has attacked the poor lawn. It is now looking very sick. He's killed the moss and weeds and raked them out, sowed new seeds (lots of them) and bought a sprinkler.

My cucumber plants are now outside again and seem to be coping - they were getting too big for indoors.

Aviary

The "aviary" came down this weekend and took Eddie 4 trips up to the skip to dispose of. A wooden playhouse on stilits is on order to replace it. Meantime - the courgettes and chillis are repotted and outside. Cucumbers still inside I think.

Funfair on the Southsea common on Saturday - and some Swimming today. Back to work tomorrow - bleuch.

Springwatch

Well - there was a bit long enough on Sunday for the grass to be dry enough to mow - so that can go in the calendar as the first mowing of the year. In fact it was dry and sunny for long enough for Lucy to think that maybe she should find her summer clothes. The co-op is optimistically displaying vast quantities of disposable BBQs.

Lucy planted some runner beans - but the seeds were last years so i'm not sure if they'll come up. She helped me repot the sunflowers and we've moved them into the unprotected outdoors - so we'll see how long they last - I realise with horror that I should have put slug pellets out as I saw a snail heading towards them first thing this morning.

After the sunflowers we repotted the little chilli plants - the chilli, courgettes and cucumbers are all still on the window ledge - which was providing a bit too much temptation for Sweep this morning as he jumped up and knocked a load over.

And then - at about 4.30pm the skies clouded over. A sea mist rolled in. rain - then hailstones then thunder and lightening.

Red Baron

The Red Baron has moved on to its new owner and the garage is now a spacious place.

Eddie & Lucy are off to the Pyramids to do some swimming and Sweep is sitting in the laundry basket.

cucumbers... or chillis

And now the cucumbers or the chillis are coming up on the windowsill - not quite sure which it is though as I didn't label them.. Think it's the cucumbers.

germination update

all Lucy's seeds have come up - so this weekend we planted them in their own plantpots and stuck them in the growhouse outside. We've now got Chillis and cucumbers in the propagator on the windowsill.

sports relief

Lucy and Eddie did the Sports Relief mile up at the Mountbatten centre yesterday - Lucy has stiff legs today but she ran all the way. I have photos but i'm having trouble uploading them - link to follow..

Lucy and I have just planted salad leave seeds, tomato seeds and courgette seeds - which are now all sitting under propagators waiting for Sweep to attack them. Then Lucy planted her own little propagator with tomatoes, sweetcorn and sunflowers... should be fun :)

Johnny Depp

We had the babysitter round last night and we went out to see Sweeney Todd. I enjoyed it - I would like a poster of a shot halfway through which features Johnny & Helena at the beach with a Tim Burton twist. Lots and lots of singing and Eddie coped with it well. Reasonably lots of spurting blood and gore - but i remembered to look away at the right time. And Sacha Baren Cohen (sp?)

Cold today - fingers were freezing by halfway to work. Should have worn my silky inner gloves (thank you Eddie :) )

This weekend we're off to London Bike Show - hurrah - to buy lots of fun things - Hope Lucy enjoys it... Obviously we are going purely for her...

Cycle helmet

In amongst spending huge loads of money on skiing kit - we stopped off at halfords for me to get a new cycle helmet as my old one is about 10 years old and as bad as it can be. The new one is much nicer - just tested it out.

Eddie and I both strained arm muscles playing Wii baseball at the weekend. Furthermore - I smashed a light blub in the process too - its a dangerous game.

Wimbourne School Xmas Fete

Lucy managed to get herself quite excited about her school Xmas Fete last saturday so we thought we'd better go. A lovely lady helped her spend her pocket money on presents and wrapped them up for her. She even won a prize on the raffle.

Lucy's 2 bottom teeth are growing back in now too.

She's told us she's not in the nativity play but she's singing in the chorus and she thinks we should still go to see it.

We've got the advent calendar and we're nearly ready for December - not quite though.

We sat watching telly making xmas cards yesterday with the groovy card set that she won in the school raffle.

Lucy was super brave at the dentist yesterday when Ruby gave her a filling :)

road safety

Lucy should have been practising road safety today at school - with a flourescent jacket - on a local "quiet" road. Gotta go home and take her to the dentist in a minute - expect the dentist will be impressed with her gaps at the front :)

We remembered her tins of tuna and sweetcorn for harvest festival as well yesterday - hopefully that should make her happy - we forgot last year and she's been telling me off ever since.

Went to staunton yesterday - which might have been disappointing - as all the animal were double fenced off due to foot and mouth disease. Fortunately Lucy only really cared about the play park so I dont think she really minded.

We have a babysitter tonight so we're off out on the razz - woooooo hooooooooooo

conkers

Eddie and Lucy tried to play conkers last night - apparently it was hard work. Lucy has been collecting pocketfuls of conkers every day after school in the play park. Last night Eddie managed to get his tool kit out and stick holes in a couple then they spent about 20 miutes discussing how you aim and hit each others conkers - it didn't quite end in tears - but it certainly didn't end in a successful game.

So we're up to episode ".07" of Heroes. We're off out to the cinema tonight thought so have to put that on hold til tomorrow. Going to see Shoot Em Up. Lucy needs a new winter coat and shoes and tights so wev'e got a trip to gunwharf planned for the weekend, along with getting her new passport sorted. And then on Sunday she's going to be "Sleeping Beauty" at her friends fancy dress party - which she has been looking forward to for 2 weeks - so I think there will be some photo takign when she's all dressed up for that. Watch this space :)

Clarence Pier

Lucy cycled all the way to clarence pier. We walked round the car boot, then Lucy had a go on the rides, a go in the play park - cycled back to Southsea for salad from Waitrose and new shirts for Eddie and new sandals for Lucy from Milletts - and finally cycled home. Managed to be out for 5 hours!

Went for a 40 minute run at lunchtime - very red and sweaty when I got back to the showers! Weather is warm not that summer has decided to make a showing in September.

Lucy's had her first week back at school as a big girl - she's now a responsible snowdrop and is showing the sunflowers a thing or two. She's rather disappointed that she's not had a chance to show her gap off in show and tell - apparently there wasn't enought time yesterday. Eddie's taken a photo so i'll stick that up at some stage.

Bank Holiday Marwell

We went to the zoo - blimey it was busy. Lovely weather caused the whole of hamsphire to descend on the zoo. It's been done up since we last went and there are lots of new play park areas. Here's some photos of penguins, tigers and Lucy playing

Bank holiday and the weather is NICE! We went swimming in the sea yesterday. We've been on bike rides too - on Saturday we rode down to the hayling ferry in the evening and sat watching people do watersports for a bit. Today we're off to the zoo.

Bank Holiday WEEEEEEKEND

It's Friday and it's nearly bank holiday weekend. Lucy is at Kyla's helping to look after Alfie.

I did another long run yesterday and a shorter one today - my injuries seem to have gone into hiding which is fantastic news.

The forecast for tomorrow is good so we've promised Lucy that after the housework we'll have a picnic in the playpark and spend as long as she wants there - which sounds pretty civilised - maybe I'll get to finish my book.

She spent the walk this morning planning how she could pack her own picnic and put it in her bag and take her scooter and hang her picnic on the handlebars - I suspect she might be looking forward to it a smidgen.

It's been a sunny weekend and we got the paddling pool out. We had a bike ride and Lucy did really well - she even did some riding on the road. We went down the the sea front and along til the pedestrians got too dense - then thought we'd better adhere to the "no bikes" signs.

And a new table from Victoriana - it's very swish - we keep admiring it. And some fancypants new crockery from the Denby shop at Gunwhark AND what's more - a sparkly new hoover.

We both finished Deathly Hallows around midnight last night - hurrah - without hearing any spoilers - but we did have to stick our fingers in our ears at the park yesterday whilst a woman discussed it on the phone.

Harry Potter Weekend

Bit of an HP festival this weekend - saw "Order of The phoenix" at the cinema yesterday. Eddie went off to get us a copy of "Deathly Hallows" each at 8am this morning and then we finished listening to Stephen Fry reading Half Blood Prince (we've been listening to the whole series again since Christmas).

Poor old Lucy is being very patient with us - BUT she did persuade the babysitter to let her stay up til 10pm last night.

Going to see Harry Potter - providing babysitter turns up. Booked tickets. Excited :D And then the book is out on Saturday.

We've just got back from a flying visit up North - went up on Friday and came back yesterday (in time for Lucy to go to Jensen's party!)

Tortured Frogs sound like squeaky balls

I was in the dining room doing some pre-work busy stuff this morning. Lucy was in the living room watching Lazy Town and eating breakfast and the cats were out frollicking in the garden. Then I started to hear the sound of one of those squeaky pet toys in the garden. I looked out and good ole Sweep seems to have found a toy to play with - but then on closer inspection I noticed the squeaky toy was huge and green and could move under its own steam. I screamed (of course) and ran out and dragged Sweep back into the house. He'd found an enormous frog and started chasing it round the garden - and the frog sounded remarkably strange.

I encouraged the poor frog into a rosemary bush where I thought it might be safe and came to work. Got my fingers crossed that I don't have disembowelled frog on my decking when I get home.

Riding new scoot, swimming and wimbledon

Wimbledon final weekend - just about to go and watch the Men's final whilst doing a CBeebies magazine with Lucy. Weather is nice and the paddling pool is out. Eddie's cleaning his bike.

I took my new scoot for a test drive to my new job at Lanstone Tech Park - Good Fun :)

And we've been swimming at the Pyramids too - Lucy had to give her new goggles and float a test out.
